Pool owners are often confused about the difference between a pool leaking versus evaporation. This is a very common question so here are some tips to tell the difference.
First, let’s talk about evaporation. Evaporation varies based on humidity, pool surface area, water to air temperature and wind speed over the pool. Pools in windy areas usually lose more water to evaporation, pools in a humid environment lose less water to evaporation than pools in a dry environment and pools lose more water to evaporation when they have more surface area.
Let’s try the bucket test to determine if it is evaporation or you need us to find a leak.
If you have an auto-fill device on your pool, then make sure to turn that off.
Fill your pool halfway up the skimmer.
Fill a 5-gallon bucket with pool water to one inch of the top, place on the top or second step of the pool.
Mark the water level inside the bucket and the water level outside the bucket.
Check the two lines in 24 hours. If the water level outside the bucket has dropped more than the water level inside the bucket, you might have a pool leak.
If you suspect that you may have a leak in your pool, please call us to schedule a maintenance appointment.
