Prepare for the Perfect Pool Party

What better way to celebrate outside living than a top notch summer pool party! As the summer is finally upon us and those cold winter months are in the rearview mirror, it is time to celebrate and enjoy being back outside. What steps should you take to ensure that everyone has a time to remember at your summer party? You could go the simplistic route and throw out a bag of chips, some towels, and turn on your fuzzy FM radio to the local pop station. That describes about 99% of the pool parties we held in my childhood backyard!
While the simplistic pool party requires little thought and planning, it is not one that people will be talking about in the months to come. To get the most out of your summer pool party, consider the following tips:

The Pool

No one wants to dive into a murky looking pool, so since your party will be hosted around this body of water, you want the water to be sparkling clear. Begin preparation a few days in advance to make sure that your chemistry will be right in line for optimum bather comfort. Take a water sample to your local pool store to have it tested and adjust your water parameters as needed.
If mother nature (or your teenage child) decides to add some unexpected nonliving organic waste to your pool the day of the party such as pollen, bird droppings, sweat, sunscreen, etc, then you can use a quick fix of a clarifier or an enzyme product to polish the water.

The Atmosphere

We have come a long way from the days of tiki torches as the sole provider of ambience for backyard patio areas. Advances in lighting such as LED products specifically designed for pool owners have come out in the past few years, and have been seen on television shows from HGTV to the housewives as a way to “lighten up” the mood at your party.
There are even floating lights that you can place throughout your pool to paint the atmosphere with color. Some motivated pool party hosts might even string traditional white Christmas lights with bendable wire to decorate trees in the backyard with mood lighting.
Japanese lanterns are also a summer favorite to string through pool and patio areas, or even to float in the pool itself. There are also cool new products available on the market that are sun pavers, which are solar lights that look like bricks installed along walkways in the yard. These kinds of simple additions are unique as well as energy efficient.
Pair some out of the box lighting designs along with scented candles (some of which even help keep the bugs away) to create the perfect evening pool party environment. For those of us lucky enough to have a fire pit, whether custom built or stock bought, the warmth and light of a glowing fire also serves as the perfect background for a summertime party.

The Music

This is a section in which only you can be the expert! There are so many apps available on which you can create playlists of any genre you seek. You could do a mixture of your favorite oldies but goodies, sprinkled with hits from today for the kids. Throw in a couple of reggae songs, and you’ll feel like you’re on a tropical vacation in no time!
Backyard sound systems have come a very long way in the past few years. Gone are the days of skipping CDs and scratchy radio tuning. These days, we create our own playlists and have options with which to broadcast them for the whole party to enjoy.
There are wireless speaker systems that range in price, and can be anywhere from a simple tower configuration to extravagant wireless speakers that use Bluetooth. These Bluetooth speakers can even be purchased in shapes such as multiple rocks to be placed throughout the yard for the ultimate “blended in” sound system.
Music can make or break the mood of your party, so know the taste of your guests and choose widely. For those of us who are extreme music lovers, another idea would be to hook up your karaoke machine and sing some poolside summertime songs with your guests.

The Food

Menu choices are vast these days when it comes to hosting a summertime pool party. Walking through the aisles of the grocery store can sometimes be overwhelming with all the option that are put forth.
From chips and dips to healthy snacks such as veggie trays and fruit, the food that you choose will help shape your party experience. Something fun could be picking a theme for your party and matching the food to your theme.

The Memories

Sometimes we tend to forget, with all of this preparation, that a get together is done with one goal in mind: making memories to last a lifetime. Don’t get so caught up in the details that you forget to have a fun time yourself!
It is ideal to do most of the preparation work in advance so that you may be the relaxed host in your own backyard. Don’t forget to grab your camera and possibly even a waterproof one to catch some of these memories in the making.
We hope that these tips will help you kick off your summer parties and help create backyard experiences that will be cherished in the years to come.
